Web users judge sites in the blink of an eye - Potential readers can make snap decisions in just 50 milliseconds.

No kidding. This hits home due to the fact that I am flying through blink by Malcom Gladwell, which expounds on this idea of Thin Slicing. In essence web surfers are Thin Slicing like madmen (and women) to make quick judgements about a site.

They scan  for what they want……really quickly and then decide if they want to spend another 2 or 3 milliseconds looking at the site….then its on to the next one.

My favorite quote from the article is as follows:

So what are the key ingredients of a good-looking website? Caudron suggests that the amount of graphics on the page should be strictly limited, perhaps to a single eye-catching image. “It’s not about getting as much stuff on the page as possible,” he says.

I have been working with some old school business types on a new site and they want all the flash and graphics possible. I have been weaning them away from that idea slowly, after all they want customers not gappers.

Questions to Ask yourself/myself when designing a website:
Sure a site can look cool but does it accomplish what you want it to?
What does it want to accomplish?
Does it accomplish it quickly?
Easily?
Are the essential portions of your site findable?
Who is your target market?
